Digitizing Michigan's Hidden Past

If the Inventory System has determined that “Permission May Be Required,” you will probably need to get clearance from the copyright holder of the item. You can use the permission form letters linked from the Copyright Resources page to obtain clearance.

However, if you find yourself in any of the following circumstances:

  • you are in doubt about needing permission to digitize the item;
  • you are having trouble determining who the copyright owners are; you can’t locate the copyright owners;
  • you are not getting a response from the copyright owners; or for any other similar problems,
You can request assistance from MMM Management by using our Copyright Assistance Request form.

There are two ways to access the Copyright Assistant Request form:

1. When you enter the item in the Inventory system and answer the copyright questions, the system makes a preliminary determination as to copyright. On that final screen, there is a link to “REQUEST HELP WITH COPYRIGHT.”

2. If you click on an item in the Inventory system for which the current Copyright Status of the item is “Permission may be required,” the Item Info page will include a button on the far right to “Request Copyright Help.”

After you complete the Assistance form, the system will automatically email a message to MMM management with all the information regarding your inquiry. MMM Management will then respond to your inquiry directly.
