Description
The following is a transcription of Martha Baldwin's diary, 1859-1860. Question marks inclosed in parentheses represent words in the original diary that were illegible. Elipses are used to indicate larger portions of the text found to be illegible.

18th Did not recite as Mr. Hill had to go away. So I have not had to study as hard. To night went down to grammar school and called at church. 19 Recited. Somehow my lessons were not as hard to day or else I studied harder at any rate I got through sooner; at four went in to Ritters a few moments. This evening I have been sewing and Mother reading. 20 Recited, in (?) and Algebra quite an easy lesson in (?) Have studied all day till five when I went to see Mary a few moments. Lockwood was there.
