The following is taken from a transcription of Martha Baldwin’s diary (1858-1859). Illegible sections of the original text are noted as follows: ______. A parenthetical question mark (?) follows words in the original text that were not completely legible but were still transcribed. May 24. Rainy. I went up to Gus this afternoon and had a good visit. May 25. It has rained every minute. Mother is not at all well. I have been very busy and now tis twilight and I have come to my room to study during the evening and it may be night. Evenings are the only time I have and I am so often hindered by company that I do not make any progress. May 26. Went over to Em’s this afternoon. May 27. This afternoon Lucy, ______ and Jane came down. Jane stays. Mother is better. Carrie is here.
