The following is taken from a transcription of Martha Baldwin’s diary (1858-1859). Illegible sections of the original text are noted as follows: ______. A parenthetical question mark (?) follows words in the original text that were not completely legible but were still transcribed. perfectly awful. To night I went down to Mr. ______ to meet my Father. Had a pleasant chat with Delia. June 23. Gus and I , like great geese, paddled down through the burning sun to Mr. ________ Had a pleasant visit though. Met George Hunt and ______ Willetts, a match I suppose. June 24. The heat and mosquitoes are intolerable. Can’t study. June 25. This hot weather is proving the ruination of my studies. This afternoon Gus and I have been horseback riding. Went to Mr. Waldrous(?) to see Mettie(?). She is very sick indeed
