The following is taken from a transcription of Martha Baldwin’s diary (1858-1859). Illegible sections of the original text are noted as follows: ______. A parenthetical question mark (?) follows words in the original text that were not completely legible but were still transcribed. will never appear. July 12. To night Carrie came here and Mary Ann came up. She and I talked most all night. July 13. Went to Gus today. Met there Mae(?), Em and her brother, Mr. and Mrs. Hill, Carrie and Mabel, Verona and Elin(?) came for Mary Ann and Mr. Ostrander(?) brought me home. July 14. My Mother took Gus and I up to Mr. __________. We there met Frank and Miss Padock(?), Maggie(?) and Eliza. Went to their literary society this evening
