The following is taken from a transcription of Martha Baldwin’s diary (1858-1859). Illegible sections of the original text are noted as follows: ______. A parenthetical question mark (?) follows words in the original text that were not completely legible but were still transcribed. talking about going to school, where we shall go. I can not any where, only Birmingham, and I had rather teach than go there. I would like to go out somewhere on the line of this railroad and teach a select school. August 8. Did not go to church but have been reading and writing. Down to sabbath school this afternoon. August 9. I went up to Emily Fishes to night to give her the pieces for the paper and then down to the village. Saw the Misses ________
