Description
The following is taken from a transcription of Martha Baldwin’s diary (1858-1859). Illegible sections of the original text are noted as follows: ______. A parenthetical question mark (?) follows words in the original text that were not completely legible but were still transcribed. had a pleasant time. Staid all night at Mr. Posts and all the day _______, going to Mr. _____ awhile with the girls, came home and then went horseback riding with Em. August 20. Papers are filled with accounts of the rejoicing because of the successful laying of the telegraph though the depths of the Atlantic. The 16th, the first message was sent from the Queen to the President and his reply; at which time the rejoicing was universal. The bells from all parts of the universe (or those brought near by Telegraph) ring forth a merry
