The following is taken from a transcription of Martha Baldwin’s diary (1858-1859). Illegible sections of the original text are noted as follows: ______. A parenthetical question mark (?) follows words in the original text that were not completely legible but were still transcribed. August 24. Yesterday and today have been very busy preparing for the celebration which comes off tomorrow. August 25. We went to the village to go with the people. The Posts, Gus and I all went together. There were a good many there and from everywhere. Frank and Wilson and I were together considerable and while they were speaking ______ with Verona, Julia, Clara, Gus, Em Snow, Mary Ann and Nellie. Went down to the lake and had a good time. A year ago Nellie Waldron was with us. Poor girl, I fear she will not join us soon again.
