Description
The following is taken from a transcription of Martha Baldwin’s diary (1858-1859). Illegible sections of the original text are noted as follows: ______. A parenthetical question mark (?) follows words in the original text that were not completely legible but were still transcribed. I guess all my friends have forgotten me for I have not had a letter for a month or more. But tis some satisfaction to know that I wrote the last letter to all. I have been reading a book called _________, the only story I have read this summer. I have also read a little in “Who’ll Follow”, a description of life in a wilderness but tis nothing extra though rather amusing. August 29. Cold very. Father had a hard chill and has been quite sick. Did not go to church. August 30. Father is sick.
