The following is taken from a transcription of Martha Baldwin’s diary (1858-1859). Illegible sections of the original text are noted as follows: ______. A parenthetical question mark (?) follows words in the original text that were not completely legible but were still transcribed. up so I can imagine how things look at home after I am gone. October 12. Very busy getting ready to go. We shall go to Lexington via Mr. Clemens and St. Clair. I hate to go for I know I shall be lonely and homesick and the people at home will miss me, yet I want to. October 13. Left home Mother and ________, all the dear ones, this morning. Got to Mt. Clemens about three o’clock in the rain. Went down to the village with Emma and called on Mrs. Williams.
