This page is incorrectly labeled as number 124 - the correct page number is 123. The following is taken from a transcription of Martha Baldwin’s diary (1858-1859). Illegible sections of the original text are noted as follows: ______. A parenthetical question mark (?) follows words in the original text that were not completely legible but were still transcribed. too true. Three have been taken from that family in less than two years. One more from that band of our schoolmates has passed beyond this world of sorrow. The fifth victim death has snatched from the group that once met within the walls of our old Academy. First Carrie(?), then Emma(?), then Maria(?), then Charlie and now Sarah. Lord help us to say they will, not ours, be done. Poor poor Mary and Jay(?). How lonely they will be. Mary and Sarah were more together than any other of the girls. November 19. Tis Friday night, but not with Friday night comes the blessed privilege of going home that I for three years have enjoyed. I do not, when I leave the schoolroom, look
