This page is incorrectly labeled as number 160 - the correct page number is 159. The following is taken from a transcription of Martha Baldwin’s diary (1858-1859). Illegible sections of the original text are noted as follows: ______. A parenthetical question mark (?) follows words in the original text that were not completely legible but were still transcribed. I fear they are sick. This evening we spent at Mrs. Miles. A letter from home. February 20. Sarah and I did not get up in time to go to church. Went this eve, Sarah and Jane ____. I have been writing to Mary Ann and Gus. February 21. This afternoon, Sarah and I went up to _____. Nothing is thought of but that ball. I have made up my mind over again to go. This evening we went to dancing school with Jane. Had a very pleasant time. February 22. Fix, fuss and then to the ball. I did hate awfully to go expecting to make some blunder every step I took in the dance. But fate was on my side and I got along remarkably well.
