This page is incorrectly labeled as number 173 - the correct page number is 172. The following is taken from a transcription of Martha Baldwin’s diary (1858-1859). Illegible sections of the original text are noted as follows: ______. A parenthetical question mark (?) follows words in the original text that were not completely legible but were still transcribed. March 7. Ann called and Mrs. _____ today and thought of going to dancing school to night. I hardly know who with but had it not rained pitchforks, _______ Mr. Davis would have called, or might have gone with Ben, but I am glad it rained for I did not feel well and was not much disposed to go. St. Clair was here but as I did not wish to accept his invitation to go into the parlor (for I know from experience that when I am with an intimate friend I like to be alone). I stayed most of the evening in my room an ______ and I was entertained by Ben till about eleven, then by some street ______ till twelve, then _____came up
