One of the alternative interfaces we are developing is browsing via timelines. Timelines can provide historical context to the objects you are looking at.

These timelines are automatically generated from timelines found in Wikipedia. Mediawiki includes the EasyTimeline tool to generate timelines.

The SIMILE Project at MIT has created a DHTML Timeline that provides more interaction. We've converted some Wikipedia timelines that link into the Making of Modern Michigan website.

We're working on a generic converter that will take any Wikipedia timeline and output a SIMILE compatible data file.
