Description
An accident occurred upon the Duluth South Shore and Atlantic Railway near the Marquette station on the 19th day of September 1887 at 800 P.M. caused by: A train of loaded ore cars (57) that was being let in the yard siding after the engine was detached,m gaining to much headway and coming violently in collision with cards in the yard. Conductor William F. Mahan and the two breakemen were on the cards. When the cards struck, Mr. Mahan was thrown under the cards and instantly killed; the other men were uninjured. 16 cards were badly broken up. An inquest was held on the body of Mr. Mahan next day. A copy of the verdict is attached. Casualties resulting from the above accident 1 employee killed.
