An accident occurred upon the Duluth, South Shore, and Atlantic Railway near Ridge Siding, 6 miles east of Au Train station on the 29th day of October 1887, at 5 o'clock P.M. caused by Engineman Charles Saunders on engine number 33, failing to obey telegraph instructions. Estimated damage $1,018.00. Men jumped from engines before they came together. Engine 33 was reversed and when the struck coupling broke between engine and tender. Engine 33 started ahead without any person on it and ran 1/2 mile when it left the track. Engineman Saunders acknowledges himself soley at fault for the accident and has been dismissed from the service.
