Description The following is a transcription of Martha Baldwin's diary, 1859-1860. Question marks inclosed in parentheses represent words in the original diary that were illegible. Elipses are used to indicate larger portions of the text found to be illegible.June 5th Sunday. My journal has had a long visit. The night of the 22nd of April, I was taken with scarlet fever & was very sick. Six weeks have now passed and I am only able to walk round the house & to ride out.
I have been over to Uncle Frank’s & up to Mr. Trowbridge’s.
For all this time, we have had a girl only one week and Mother is miserable. It seems as though I must go to work but my strength fails me.
I so hope we can get one soon for Mother looks so bad & sick. Poor Mother.
