The following is a transcription of Martha Baldwin's diary, 1859-1860. Question marks inclosed in parentheses represent words in the original diary that were illegible. Elipses are used to indicate larger portions of the text found to be illegible.

Had a chill this morning and have been scarcely able to sit up but have (?) read at a page in (?) by way of stimulus. That essay for our Lyceum next week for my part I don’t know where it is to come from. There are not materials enough in my brain to make one up. (?) est. 6th To night I went to a concert at the hall. The Swiss Bell Ringers. The entertainment was fine. After it was over of course they had to have a dance. I stayed a little while and danced once. Am just as near sick as I can be.
