The following is a transcription of Martha Baldwin's diary, 1859-1860. Question marks inclosed in parentheses represent words in the original diary that were illegible. Elipses are used to indicate larger portions of the text found to be illegible.

14th Studying. Lucy came in a few moments. I am reading Plutarch’s Lives. To day finished that of (?) and the composition with (?) and have commenced the (?). Have also commenced Physiology. Am to read a chapter or more a day. 15th Cold and snowy. Studying. The night for grammar school. Mary and I went down. Found no one there. Light up and spent the time while waiting in reading the private (?). Hid his slippers & coat bill and such like and departed. Received a letter from Elija Whitney and yesterday one from Mary (?) who has lost her father.
