Interview conducted by Roger F. Lane for the Michigan Supreme Court Historical Society. Justice Smith recalls his childhood, education, entrance into politics. He then discusses his time as Chairman of the Public Service Commission and State Auditor General; Tom Burns; and his appointment to the Supreme Court. He discusses legislative apportionment; Scholle v. Hare; Reynolds v. Simms; losing re-election to Tom Brennan; writing decisions on the Fenestra and Berkaw v. Mayflower Congregational Church cases; excusing himself from a General Motors Case; and the judicial selection process. He also discusses the Mallory case; criminal cases; custody cases; People v.
