The following is taken from a transcription of Martha Baldwin’s diary (1858-1859). Illegible sections of the original text are noted as follows: ______. A parenthetical question mark (?) follows words in the original text that were not completely legible but were still transcribed. May 3. At home and hard at work. This evening have been reading to Father, A Story of Revolution. Have commenced studying at night. School at B commenced today. May 4. Rainy. Busy. Tonight I came to my room at candle light and have been studying. Have commenced the _______ oration _______ Anchor(?) Poets. If I do not find it very hard I can finish it in two weeks. I am also studying Physiology. Mr. Hill was married to day, I suppose. May 5. Gus came down to night to stay with me.
