The following is taken from a transcription of Martha Baldwin’s diary (1858-1859). Illegible sections of the original text are noted as follows: ______. A parenthetical question mark (?) follows words in the original text that were not completely legible but were still transcribed. couraged part of the time because Mother would not let me take more charge of the work. Father has just come from the village and brought part of my things, the last. I have not studied any this week on account of Abbie’s being here but will try to tonight. May 14. Uncle Franks’s people have been down and Abbie went home with them. I have been studying. May 15. This afternoon I went up to Gus, then down to the schoolhouse and found her there. Came home. Received a letter from Miss Clark.
