The following is taken from a transcription of Martha Baldwin’s diary (1858-1859). Illegible sections of the original text are noted as follows: ______. A parenthetical question mark (?) follows words in the original text that were not completely legible but were still transcribed. old lady, taking her baby and looking so _______. June 3. I am tired tonight and can’t study though my conscience smites me for doing so little. Gus and I have been to the village in the rain. Tis eat and wash dishes and wash dishes and eat, and when the summer’s gone, what will I have accomplished. Nothing at all. June 4. No time to study to night. Today I expected the Baldwin girls and Ada but they did not come on account of Mother I suppose. Gus was here.
