Description
The following is taken from a transcription of Martha Baldwin’s diary (1858-1859). Illegible sections of the original text are noted as follows: ______. A parenthetical question mark (?) follows words in the original text that were not completely legible but were still transcribed. but it is thought she will recover. Also saw Mabel(?) Holling(?), ________, Jane and all the folks. June 26. Today Mother and I have finished reading Scott’s poems. That that I most fancy is “Lord of the Isles” because there is in that more of the Scott’s and fervent devotion to his country. The comedy _____________ too is excellent and “Marmion”, where Douglas when he is upbraided for his treatment to Marmion answers. The hand of Douglas is his own and never shall so friendly grasp the hand of such as Marmion clasp.
