The following is taken from a transcription of Martha Baldwin’s diary (1858-1859). Illegible sections of the original text are noted as follows: ______. A parenthetical question mark (?) follows words in the original text that were not completely legible but were still transcribed. very pleasant visit. July 2. At home. Em has been here. Down to the office on horseback. July 3. Again tis Saturday night. I certainly thought Gus would come and someone from the village ere this but let them stay away. We have pleasant homes and can stand it if they don’t care to know us. Mother, Em, and Sophy have all been to Pontiac and I have been alone working in the yard, some trimming he cypress and such like. I suppose the girls, Mary and Jane(?), are awfully mad because I did not
