The following is taken from a transcription of Martha Baldwin’s diary (1858-1859). Illegible sections of the original text are noted as follows: ______. A parenthetical question mark (?) follows words in the original text that were not completely legible but were still transcribed. come there and stay all the time. Am sorry to have any hard feelings but they will punish themselves the most. July 4. I went to church this morning. No regular sermon preached, only communion. Hoyt and Calvin went to Troy yesterday and back today. Hoyt came up on the steps and spoke as pleasant as a basket of chips(?). I wonder if they will dare come to see us now. _____ has gone to his Uncles to work without going to see Gus, too. I suppose everyone
