The following is taken from a transcription of Martha Baldwin’s diary (1858-1859). Illegible sections of the original text are noted as follows: ______. A parenthetical question mark (?) follows words in the original text that were not completely legible but were still transcribed. August 1. Tis Sunday. I did not feel well and did not go to church but have been writing a piece for the _________, the papers of the literary at Bloomfield Center, a letter to Em Tripp, making in all about ten papers. Now I must write another and ought to write a piece for this weeks Jacksonian. Mother has been reading Lucy(?) Howard. August 2. Rainy. Carrie came here tonight. August 3. I have not felt at all well. Mother and Father went to the village
