The following is taken from a transcription of Martha Baldwin’s diary (1858-1859). Illegible sections of the original text are noted as follows: ______. A parenthetical question mark (?) follows words in the original text that were not completely legible but were still transcribed. October 8. Mary Spear has visited here. Our folks went to the fair. October 9. Went down to the village. Called on Mary Ann. She is going West. Stayed some time with Verona and she came home with me. We talked most all night. Gave everyone a last taking(?) which must last till we “turn up” again. October 10. Down to church and over to Uncle Franks. October 11. Father says to stay. We cannot go till Wednesday. I have been changing the carpets and fixing
